Welcome (back) to the command line

The Windows "Monad" Shell Beta 2 can be downloaded from MS, here. To quote em:

Windows "Monad" Shell is a new interactive command-line and task-based scripting technology in Windows that enables administrators to more efficiently and securely automate and control system management tasks on both desktops and servers. "Monad" Shell provides powerful task-based control (via built-in command line tools and utilities) and a powerful scripting language that enables comprehensive scripted control of the Windows operating system and applications. The key features of Monad include

* Simplified command-based navigation of the operating system (including drives, startup files, and registry).

* Command extensibility that allows administrators to quickly write scripts, customize commands, and author their own shell tools.

* Powerful object manipulation capabilities (objects can be directly manipulated or pipelined to other tools or databases).

* Direct control of system data (without the need to perform error-prone text parsing and object lookup).

* Powerful aliasing and output formatting capabilities.

* Support for existing scripts and command line tools.

Note that you also need to download .Net Framework Ver 2.0

Community Bookmarks and searching

Since I work(?) of a lot of machines, need a way of keeping my bookmarks with me and updated. I use del.icio.us to store my bookmarks online. I find it convenient and and the tags make for quick searches. Most importantly is very very light since its text. Today I looked at another free service that lets me store and share my bookmarks and a lot more. Shadows. But its a bit heavy. Yahoo is into the act too, with My Web 2.0 BETA. If you visit Yahoo! Next (Yahoo's equivalent of Google Labs) they have got a whole bunch of things happening including Yahoo! Mindset figure that one out.
Clipmarks takes things further letting you bookmark things on a page. But it seems to be OS specific. Jeteye is a lot lighter and also lets you save and share searches.
I wonder with all these community bookmark offerings is there not a lot of wasted work by the end user? Your saved searches/clips on one site is not shared to others (obviously), so then you will need a cliping service search engine just like a blog search engine. Also, unless they provide a method to backup your saved data, what happens when they decide to close shop?

Im sticking to del.icio.us for now.

Opera is free

Opera the browser I like best is now free. I had stopped using Opera for a year and switched to Firefox. I liked Opera a lot and was uncomfortable to use a hacked copy. I really liked it that much. Just the night before I had downloaded ver 8.02 and now its upto 8.50 and free.
The only thing I miss is the ad blocker in Firefox. Opera has an ad blocker via filter.ini, but its a bit messy. There is a utility to help though, by diplo.

Back

At last yesterday I have shifted to a new ISP and on my new PC. Hope I will be blogging regularly again.
Right now going through the pain of reinstalling all my tools, restoring bookmarks. I am very impressed with MTNL as an ISP. Tried out their helpdesk this morning, they called back in less than 5 minutes. The guy who called back actually seemed to have knowledge of computers, not just a call centrer idiot. They solved my DNS issue instantly. Unlike Reliance Communications (my previous ISP) where I had to hold the line for 20 minutes then talk to a total idiot.
