PC down

Saturday morning woke to find my PC at the login screen. A few reboots and now windows is gone. Weirdly I did nothing to provoke windows. Now the XP CD see refuses to have anything to do with my HDD. This morning the wire was pulled in for my new internet connection. Got to get the PC working fast. High time got that dvd writer, cd writer just is too painfull with the large amount of data I store.

Tonight TrendMicro's page seemed to be unhappy. Threw up some cryptic errors when I tried to go anywhere.

Picasa Web

Google has now let you extend your Picasa online with Picasa Web Albums.
Its still in a 'TEST' mode and its invite only. Demo user account can be seen here
It gives you 250MB of free storage after which you need to pay. You need to update Picasa on your desktop too, but you can do that only after you get the invite. This gives a new button that interfaces to the web.
Does this mean that Hello is dead? I never really got comfortable with that anyway.
I doubt it will ever go against flickr. Though it has some community type sharing. Now if they full adopted Orkut, polished its interface and married it to Picasa Web Album with chat on the side it would be fun.

I dream on

I will be able to use my lens with the Sony DSLR. The preview seems positive. More at DC Resource.

Not exactly what I would take to read on the beach, but I am not complaining. See these pics on flickr of girls reading UNIX book.

Planet Tutorial

Very quick tutorial on making planets in Photoshop. I remember there being some plugin that gave this effect too, but can't remember the name.

Try it out from skyetis.com/Tutorial/

No sex please, robot, just clean the floor - Sunday Times - Times Online

Article in the Sunday Times quotes a guy as saying people would have sex with robots in five years time. Wired's Sex Drive column will love this.

Meanwhile I will be stocking up on the WD-40 ;-)

Scanner

At long last I decide to buy a scanning radio. Communications Electronics Inc has the right price. And this lovely clause
If you are using a credit or debit card issued outside of the United States, US territories or Canada, we also require a printed and signed copy of our completed web order form, a photocopy of the front and back of your signed card, and a copy of page one of your current credit or debit card statement faxed to +1-734-663-8888 for order acceptance.

So this is not going to happen easily.

The sound of clothes

Yes. They have taken the trouble to record a woman getting dressed in an anechoic room. Audiophile grade (un)strippers? Read more at the blog.

SACD

You cant play back SACD discs on a PC. This means that the only way I can listen to the surround tracks on SACD is to put down money for a player. I agree that a dedicated player is going to sound better than a PC soundcard, but at least to experiment it would have been fun.
Whats more the SACD I have (Dark Side of the Moon 30th Annioversary Edition) is a hybrid i.e. it plays back as a 2 channel on any audio CD Player, but.... apparently the 2 channel recording on this disc is flawed. Been hearing this recently, it seems audio CDs are getting the commercial treatment. They are being pushed so they clipped. And clipping in digital is harsh as compared to analog.
Read more about the flaws in this recording on Stereophile.
Also worth a read SACD vs DVD-Audio.
From what I read the original LP or CD of this recording has to be heard.

RFID is evil

Im all for privacy and recognise that RFID can be a threat to this. But this book- The Spychips Threat : Why Christians Should Resist RFID and Electronic Surveillance by is really pushing it. The end is near. And Walmart is manned by the devils diciples?
More on Wired.
Time to get the foil hats again. Wonder if foil underwear is also required, keep my genes safe.

Yahoo infestation

Yahoo wants to be all over your life. In your PC, in your mobile phone. Now they want your TV too. See Yahoo Go!
Wonder what it does with my Series 40 phone. Probably nothing.
I like Yahoo and Google so I shall experiment.
