OS/2 Warp - Goodbye

23 December 2005 was the last day for OS/2 Warp marketing. Support too will stop on 31 December 2006. OS/2 was stable, a lot more stable than the IBM support staff :P who tried to help me install it.I fooled about with OS/2 for a while. It talked to Novell and at the time that was important to me. Tushar will have some memories of Warp too.

Minimalist NAD mod

I had posted earlier about the WinAmp touch screen. The same person has a cooling mod for a NAD (of for that matter any amp). It's a good idea and doesnt require any opening up of the amp. But I would like to add some points.
  • Use a fan that uses ball bearings rather than sleeve bearing. Found it lasts much longer and is quiet. I have been running 5 inch ball bearing axial fans (240 v AC) for years 24 hrs a day and they dont fail.
  • Secondly why put fan so close to the amp, may in the odd chance (depending on fan quality) induce some interference. Instead put it a bit away and use black ribbed flexi pipe available cheap at any hardware store.
Cooling any electronics is always nice idea :D

Quality Sound cards in India

Just found that M-Audio has a dealer in Chennai. Promusical does not have much on their website yet, but lets hope they have some decent prices.

T9 Multilingual

Tegic communication has T9 for English and 48 other languages including Hindi. They even do Chinese.
Sloppy Type is their T9 product for Touch Screen Devices.
But what I really love is their new software feature- backup. Once T9 has learnt your words its a real pain when you get new phone and have to start again. Read ther press release.

Mac in your pocket

Well not the real thing, but its close and very portable. Instructions on how to get a mac emulator running of a USB stick. Yes its not the very latest OS thats why it fits on a 32Mb stick.

Online bookmarks

Simpy is yet another bookmark manager. Its prettier than del.icio.us and even lets you import your del.icio.us bookmarks, but I wont shift. Del.icio.us has become part of Yahoo! so its likely to get pretty too. Not that pretty is a good thing.
Now the crying will start about using the Yahoo! login system for del.icio.us. Actually I thought that Google would buy it not Yahoo! At least now I am quite sure the service will live on, always freared it would die for lack of funds.

Palm pilot controlled Winamp

TouchAmp is a software running on a Palm handheld to provide touch screen control of Winamp. His setup looks nice too I see a NAD at the bottom :D
Must see if it wors thru IR or just the serial port though.

Another way to waste time

Damn Interesting. The sites name says it all. Its very difficult to stop reading this site once you get started. Crazy factoids from all over.

Heavy Buildings

Can heavy buildings cause earthquakes? Article here in The Gaurdian. Somehow I dont think its right.

Self Healing Paint

Nissan has a new paint out that it claims will repair itself in a few days after being scratched. Read the press release for "Scratch Guard Coat". They have a picture there too. The odd thing is what they say is the cause for most scratches.

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., has developed the world’s first clear paint that repairs scratches on painted car surfaces, including scratches from car-washing machines, off-road driving and fingernails.

Scratches from car-washing machines account for the majority of scratches to painted car surfaces.

Fingernails? I didnt think they were harder than paint. Also means using the rear seat is better than using the bonnet. For the paintwork anyway.

Next they need to do it for make-up. Self healing foundation and lipstick.

Sony has something for keeping DVDs going. Its not self healing but makes it a bit scratch proof. AccuCORE Scratch Gaurd.

Hmm wonder if its flavoured
